In this paper we explore the origin and development of monetary theory in Sweden. We analyze the impact on monetary theory from three origins: 1) The international monetary discourse, 2) Influences from previous domestic monetary scholars and 3) Monetary empirics, i.e. current economic and monetary experiences. We also aim to analyze the use of rhetoric in constructing these monetary theories as part of a process of legitimizing the use of power. As such imposed monetary practices may be legitimized by the use of concepts such as “justice” “utility” and/or “the common good”. We start our study in the year 1521 since this year Sweden’s strong regent Gustav Wasa came to power and we end in 1776 with the publishing of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. 1776 also coincided with the ending of the paper standard by the first attempt in Sweden to build a monetary regime based on a pure silver standard.
