ABSTRACT OF PAPER

Title: Social Justice and Common Good in 19th century economics: is there a utilitarian heritage in Saint-Simonian Political Economics?
Author:

The links between Saint-Simonism and utilitarianism in economics are still fairly unclear, while a Benthamian relationship is sometimes clearly claimed by Saint-Simonian writers. This paper examines the first moment of this relationship, which is the link maintained by the doctrine of Saint-Simon (1760-1825) with certain writings by Bentham (1748-1832). As well as explicit references and terms common to both, it pinpoints five dimensions of this connection, especially the likening between the general principle of utility and industry. It concludes that there is a real relationship, but one that is not stabilised, and that will give rise to subsequent transformations.
